史蒂芬·霍金，1942年1月8日出生于英国牛津，是现代最伟大的物理学家之一，霍金是剑桥大学的卢卡斯数学教授，获得了包括总统自由勋章在内的众多奖项和荣誉。著有《时间简史》《果壳中的宇宙》《大设计》《黑洞不是黑的》等书，2018年3月14日，霍金去世，长眠于西敏寺大教堂，与牛顿和达尔文为邻。

No matter how powerful a computer you have, if you put lousy data in you will get lousy predictions out.

To see how, imagine a clock is being sucked into it. As the clock gets closer and closer to the black hole, it begins to get slower and slower. Time itself begins to slow down. Now imagine the clock as it enters the black hole—well, assuming of course that it could withstand the extreme gravitational forces—it would actually stop. It stops not because it is broken, but because inside the black hole time itself doesn’t exist. And that’s exactly what happened at the start of the universe.

I hope that science and technology will provide the answers to these questions,but it will take people, human beings with knowledge and understanding, to implement these solutions. Let us fight for every woman and every man to have the opportunity to live healthy, secure lives, full of opportunity and love. We are all time travellers, journeying together into the future. But let us work together to make that future a place we want to visit.

Be brave, be curious, be determined, overcome the odds. It can be done.

People want answers to the big questions, like why we are here. They don’t expect the answers to be easy, so they are prepared to struggle a bit. When people ask me if aGod created the universe, I tell them that the uestion itself makes no sense. Time didn’t exist before the Big Bang so there is no time for God to make the universe in. It’s like asking for directions to the edge of the Earth—the Earth is a sphere that doesn’t have an edge, so looking for it is a futile exercise.

Do I have faith? We are each free to believe what we want, and it’s my view that the simplest explanation is that there is no God. No one created the universe and no one directs our fate.
