This longanticipated Norton Critical Edition represents an extensive revision of its predecessor, On Liberty, edited by the late David Spitz. "Commentary" collects seven major assessments of MiII's writings. The contemporary perspectives of R. H. Hutton and James Fitzjames Stephen and the more recent analyses of Isaiah Berlin, Gertrude Himmelfarb, John C. Bees, Jeremy Waldron, and Susan Moiler Okin provide readers with a critical overview of one of the most important political philosophers.

A Selected Bibliography and an Index are also included.
