England, in 1936. He was educated at Winchester College and at

Cambridge University and received his Ph.D. from Yale University in

1965. He is George Burton Adams Professor of HIstory at Yale, where

he is also chairman of the Council on East Asian Studies and

director of the Division of the Humanities.

兄食其弟，夫食其妻，辄相谓曰：与其为人食，不如吾自食，稍延旦夕之命。

改嫁者，夫家财产及原有妆奁，并听前夫之家为主。
